Our Pedra Bonita Hiking Tour in Rio de Janeiro starts with a hotel pick up, and then a 30 minutes drive to the beginning of the trail, in the Tijuca Forest National Park. Pedra Bonita has one of the top 5 best views in Rio, and as most of its trail is done in open fields, its important to wear sunblock and a cap in sunny days. Also, because it is located in an Atlantic Rain Forest, humidity is quite common there, so some sudden or casual rain is just part of the adventure. The hike itself can take anything from 30 minutes to 1 hour, on a one mile long trail. Mammals like quatis (raccoons), micos (common Brazilian monkey species), as well as birds like toucans, hawks, buzzards and many others species, may be seen along the way. The trail is considered to be easy to moderate and some least physical condition is required.
Once we reach the summit at 696 meters (2,283) feet, the views are exceptionally breathtaking. We can see the west side of the city, along with most of the Zona Sul (South Zone), Pedra da Gávea , São Conrado beach and even the statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) in the distance. The name Pedra Bonita means Beautiful Stone in portuguese, and it is related to the wonderful views the mountain offers from its summit. It was given by farmers who owned the lands around the mountain , back in the 16th century.
